The MD2K Center has not only brought together the top investigators in mobile health, but also a group of dedicated student researchers who work with them. This is one in a series of profiles of the Ph.D. candidates and postdoctoral scholars who work with the center. This time, we are profiling a recent graduate.
Amin A. Ali
Amin Ali recently completed his Ph.D. in computer science at the University of Memphis, where he studied under Dr. Santosh Kumar, the director of the MD2K Center.
He currently an assistant professor at the University of Dhaka in his hometown of Dhaka, Bangladesh.
"I feel privileged to work with the MD2K team of distinguished researchers," Ali said. "I intend to contribute to this exciting area of research which aims to realize the vision of predictive, preventive, personalized, participatory, and precision (P5) medicine that can potentially revolutionize the healthcare system."
He said he is most interested in the areas of machine learning and wearable sensors. While at the University of Memphis, he also participated in the WiSeMANet lab (Wireless Sensors and Mobile Ad Hoc Networks).
"The MD2K center brings together researchers who are committed to the development of mHealth technologies," Ali said. "I, along with others from WiSeMANet lab at U. of M., over the past few years have been working on the development of machine learning models to make robust and reliable inferences of health risk behaviors (e.g., smoking, drug intake, and stress) from physiological signals collected by wearable sensors.
"Our goal is to gain a better understanding of the antecedents and precipitants of such health risk behaviors and develop effective just-in-time mHealth interventions."
